One day a girl traveled from Hungary to the USA with only a purse full of money and landed on foreign soil without any huge expectations. But she had what most other people don't have "Curiosity".
She kept her curiosity to make the world better and she did it!
Yes, it's the story of Katalin kariko a Hungarian biochemist who has stubborn in her research field and science.
She had a great track record from the research department, but many thought she chooses not a potential field of research that is mRNA research.
she fascinated to work on the mRNA research but people who were funded her thought that she has many talents but she chooses mRNA studies and it's not important and demoted her. Her funds were stopped for research.
Despite this bad situation she kept thinking about her studies and strongly believed one day it may have huge potential.
so she started with what she had at that time without any second thought.
One day she met Drew Weissman while photocopying who is an expert in vaccine research, their conversation went like this :
She: so you working on vaccines, right?
Drew: yes, which is your field ms. Katalin?
Katalin: its mRNA and I am dive into it deeper ;)
Drew: you are thinking the same as me right?
Katalin: yes! can we join the research and try to make mRNA Vaccines
that's all, that single conversation creates a new field of research The mRNA Vaccines.
Now she was started working on herpes, HIV, and many mRNA vaccines.
(2020 The Apocalypse Came)
CORONA!@#$%
Now she and her team started working on mRNA vaccines for corona by analyzing the genetics inside it.
And big biotech companies funded and boosted their research.
Maderna, BioNtech were saw the huge potential that no one thinks before that is important.
Now, the mRNA vaccine is the technique that is used in every single approved past produce vaccine against corona.
(Covishield in India also mRNA vaccine)
Her greater willingness and stubbornness towards her research no help the world to fight against this pandemic.
Her inspiring story tells us, If you think you were right and see the greater good - just do it no matter what happens.
If she gave up just think an ordinary vaccine goes through long years of process to get approved and make our situation most vulnerable to this viral pandemic.
πFor this great work, she is going to get a NOBLE PRIZE nominee next year.
SOME OF THE TECHNICAL EXPLANATION AS SIMPLE AS POSSIBLE :
In our body, every cell replicates and works by its DNA. The process of the cell's all work was carried out by proteins which are from RNA that came from DNA.
DNA > RNA > Proteins.
Every other vaccine created before was either inactivated or killed. The problem with this type of vaccine it has a chance that some of the viruses were alive or active post process. If that happens there is more chance you get sick from it. So it takes years of development and research to find out the best inactivate or killing technique for every single type of virus.
But mRNA vaccine on other hand uses the loophole in biology where it uses the host body to produce only a particular part of the virus just to be recognized by the immune system.
In the case of covid, the virus bind into our cells by the spike(like a hand) then infects the cells to make more virus.
so covid mRNA vaccines have RNA parts that are directly injected into our body. Now,
our cells go through this phase, (covid spike mRNA) RNA > protein (Spike protein)
Now our body cells create only spikes and the immune system alerted and target the cells to destroy them.
so, it's a more appropriate and useful approach without injecting the whole virus into our body!
Thank you for reading this far. I hope you know some new things today!
A Bonus Fact: Katalin worked for the world to make it better, But her daughter on the other hand done pretty well at athletics.
Her daughter, SUSAN FRANCIA won 7 world-level gold medals in a rowing sport. Two of them were from the Olympics!
Quiet an interesting Family!
