Welcome to the first episode of this series of Greatest invention and it's consequences. In this episode, we are going to know how communication changes from man-help to machine-help.
The Telegraph or telegram is one of the greatest inventions in the middle of the 19th century (1800's). And it leads to the greater continuation of the invention based on it.
First of all, Can we start with a little story?
An American man once lived in a city, and his family lived in a remote village. One day his wife fell sick and bedridden. So their family sent a messenger with a horse to reach her husband in town. After hearing the news the man reached his family after a month. Sadly, his wife already died and buried because she cannot hold on this much time. This incident affects him very serious and motivated to invent something which transfer message quickly and easily reachable. So, He invented Morse Code after his name Samuel Morse. And later, He introduced an electronic telegraph to send and receive messages.
Quite a sad story! But if u think it's not a big step, let's look into how messages passed back in human civilization.
At first, Men are carrying
written or order and messages by walk, run, or traveled by horse. Even sometimes they used ravens and pigeons as messengers. Then, they realized it's the time is taken and very slow.
For short distances, they used light and sound to send a signal.
I read a story about a king in the Mughal empire. Her wife about to give birth to a child and at once, unfortunately, his empire was attacked by enemies. So he had to go to fight and defend his empire and also curious to know whether it's a prince or princess.
So he made an idea and rally men with drums from his castle to the war field. They stood the distance of hearing the sound of the near drummer. Then he ordered, "If I had a son, beat the drum once, if its a girl, beat the drum twice". Then he went for war.
A princess was born and the first man from the castle beat the drum twice and the second man follows and it reached through them to field and king won the war as well as he heard the news about his new daughter was born.
This was the first time in history a static message passed. Then, this technique was used for various purposes in short distances.
Now, we come to the man morse, His telegraph was approved with his language pattern of morse language.
This message not include a direct alphabet but contains beep and dot signals. And it's useful for sending coded secret messages in the army and various departments.
Then its little brother comes to play... "The Telegram" which again made a revolution. Despite the coded messages in the telegraph, telegram used simple language and letters for communication. And it connected citizens and the postal system.
After the 20th-century fax was introduced, it carries along messages and also pictures. And it was getting improved in every generation.
Then it leads to various wireless connectivity systems like radio messages, telephone, e-mail, and now we use the internet for sharing and communication of messages and all sorts of things.
It all happened by a man's small invention and people who work to improve it over the decades.
So don't stop inventing and thinking even it seems small. Because smaller things change the world dramatically.
Now we come to the end of this episode, hope you guys liked it.
